Stake Conference is usually nice & I take notes just to make sure I'm paying attention, but for the most part, I have never really taken away much. This year I feel very differently. David & I had been talking a lot recently on how to be more unified in our marriage with our busy schedules & how to be more diligent in keeping the commandments (esp. with the recent General Conference call to Listen & Obey the Prophets) and therefore find MORE happiness in our day-to-day living. This weekends Stake Conference seemed to specifically answer our pondering.
The first talk by Brother Brotherson on the Saturday evening session discussed obedience to three specific principles in order to be able to “always have his Spirit to be with us”.
1) Scripture Study Daily; personal & family
2) Fervent Prayer
3) Listening & Acting on what the Spirit tells you- immediately
The second talk was by a non-member who has been investigating for years who shared what he does know from his life’s experiences.
The third talk was my FAVORITE & edified me greatly- she talked about Hunger & Thirst from the “Be Attitudes” & shared a perspective I'd never considered, “Blessed are those who thirst and hunger AFTER righteousness” as in not only those who seek it hungrily, but those who CONTINUE to be hungry even after they have been righteous & are waiting patiently for its promised blessing of being FILLED with light :D
As for quotes she said “sorrow allows us to experience the power of God”
and that in our prayers we shouldn't pray to avoid it for us or our families, but that we should pray for more trust that we will learn & grow from our trials to become as He would have us, in other words, our best selves. I really appreciated her message.
The next speaker spoke about the spirit of Aloha, and how we should put ourselves in situations to serve one another.
The next of my favorite speakers was a soon-t0-be convert and he spoke on how to be happy under any and all circumstances (have the spirit with you- which I believe constitutes the theme of the night). But to quote his words when telling of the spirit of the church he said, “It's like going somewhere with a breathtaking view, somewhere beautiful, beautiful because you know God created it.” I love that, that the church is breathtakingly beautiful because you know God created it.
There were two more talks, but these were my highlights of the evening session.
